Obituary for Maynard A. "Butch" Darrow

Maynard A. "Butch" Darrow
Maynard “Butch” Allen Darrow

LaGrangeville - Maynard “Butch” Allen Darrow, 75, passed away peacefully at home on April 4, 2018.

Born on November 8, 1942 in Ossining, N.Y., Butch was the son of the late Maynard and Edna Darrow. As a child, Butch moved with his parents and two sisters to Red Oaks Mill. In 1950, when he was 8 years old, he started playing in the Red Oaks Mill Little League. He went on to play in the Little, Junior and Senior league programs in Wappingers and the Poughkeepsie Twilight League. Butch graduated from Wappingers High School in 1960, then attended Dutchess Community College, where he also played baseball before being drafted into the minor leagues and signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates Class D Batavia team as a catcher.

In 1964, Butch was critically injured and could no longer play baseball. While recovering in the hospital, he met the love of his life, Letitia “Tish” Kaley, who was his nurse. They married on May 8, 1966 at St. James church in Milton, N.Y. She survives at home.

In addition to his wife Tish and their sons Justin Eric Darrow of Hopewell Junction and Brendan Patrick Darrow of LaGrangeville, Butch is survived by his daughters-in-law, Jeanne Cotroneo Darrow and Sheila Nieri Darrow; his four grandchildren Eric William Darrow, Anthony Allen Darrow, Ryan Joseph Darrow and Leah Elizabeth Darrow; his sister-in-law Mary Kaley of Newtown, Conn; his niece Erin Parker and her husband Eddie and children Ramona, Charlie and Theo; and his sister Teddy Novak. He is predeceased by his sisters, Wynne and Patricia, and his nephew Robert Novak.

Butch was always involved in Justin’s and Brendan’s sports activities. From 1978-1988, Butch coached basketball and baseball in the Town of LaGrange.

A union carpenter for many years, Butch gained field experience with E.J. Brown, Corbetta and Poughkeepsie Concrete. In 1977, he and Leslie “Lucky” Lindhe formed Darlind Construction Inc. of LaGrangeville. Butch also established Darlind Associates in 1981. By the late 1990s, as sole owner, Butch had broadened and diversified Darlind into a well-regarded commercial general contractor and specialty concrete contractor. He was the builder of many schools, churches, and commercial buildings throughout the Hudson Valley. In 2010, he and his sons expanded the companies further, to include Storm King Group. Butch was particularly pleased and proud that Justin and Brendan had chosen careers in the family business.

Butch always took great pride in doing whatever was needed to get the job done right and earned a reputation for honesty and integrity. Throughout his career, he actively fostered the development of the construction industry in the Hudson Valley through serving on the boards of the Construction Contractors Association, The Building Contractors Association of Westchester and Mid-Hudson, the Associated General Contractors of America, the Master Builders Association of Dutchess County, and as a past chairman of the Fabricators, Erectors & Reinforcing Contractors Association of the Hudson Valley. He also served on the boards of many local unions and trust funds.
While attempting to semi-retire from entrepreneurship, he enjoyed playing golf, vacationing in Cape Cod with his family, and watching his grandchildren play sports. They, in turn, took great pride in seeing their “Grandpa” get inducted into the Dutchess County Baseball Hall of Fame this past fall.

Butch was a long-time member of Dutchess Golf & Country Club and served on its board of directors. He also belonged to the Eastern Seniors Golf Association and Dennis Golf Association in Dennis, Mass. He was a life member and past president of the Mid-County Rod & Gun Club.

Calling hours will be Sunday, April 8 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, April 9 at 10 a.m. at St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction.

Donations may be made in his memory to Union Vale Fire and Rescue (visit www.uvfdny.org) or The Honor Flight (visit www.honorflight.org). Please visit his Book of Memories at www.mchoulfuneralhome.com.
