Obituary for Gregory Thomas Quinn

HOPEWELL JUNCTION – Gregory Thomas Quinn, 65, died on August 20, 2014 at his summer home in Toms River, NJ, from a complication due to diabetes. A Hopewell Junction resident for 16 years, he previously resided in Putnam County for 23 years.

Greg was born in the Bronx on October 6, 1948 to Thomas and Margaret (Quattlender) Quinn. On August 8, 1970 he married Ann (Johnson) Quinn at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church.

In addition to his loving wife of 44 years, Greg is survived by his sons, William Quinn and Joseph Quinn, and Joseph’s wife Kathleen Byrne; his granddaughter Zelda Quinn Benedetto; his brother Donald Quinn and wife Catherine; his sister Patricia Raymond and her husband Peter; and many nieces and nephews.

Greg served as a Town of Kent Councilman from 1980 to 1985 and a Putnam County Legislator (District 3) from 1985 to 1993. Among other political achievements, he cofounded the Putnam Recreation Program for the Handicapped, Putnam’s first organization to address the recreational needs of disabled children. Greg was a high school English teacher in the Bronx from 1971 to 1981. After that he worked for Guideposts in Carmel for 19 years organizing distribution data and earned a Masters Degree in Computer Science. In 2000 he returned to teaching high school English in the Bronx, which he continued until retiring in 2013. While living in Carmel, he was a parishioner at St. James the Apostle Church where he was a lector, Eucharistic Minister, and RCIA teacher. He was also a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Council #6318, Knights of Columbus in Carmel. In 1981, he participated in the Rotary International Fellowship Exchange to India. After moving to Hopewell Junction he was a parishioner at St. Columba Church.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 6 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 10am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, followed by entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
