George Joseph Gatins
POUGHQUAG – George J. Gatins, 78, of Poughquag, died at home on September 1, 2015 after a long illness.

George was born on December 6, 1936 in New York City, the son of Helena Meehan Gatins and Joseph Gatins. He attended parochial schools and graduated from Iona College. George served in the United States Navy and was a member of the New York City Police Department before becoming a New York State Parole Officer in 1968. He retired as a Senior Parole Officer in 1993. George loved history, music and the New York Yankees. In fact he loved to tell the story of having witnessed Don Larsen's perfect game in the World Series in 1956. He also loved the New York Giants, and all things Irish.

He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 55 years, Teresa Fleming Gatins; his children, Deborah Gatins, Ellen Gatins Block and her husband Andrew, George Gatins, Jr. and his wife Sydney, and John Gatins and his wife Ling; and his 7 grandchildren, Kerry, Daniel, Jason, Finn, Ty, Pearl, and Rose. He is also survived by his brother, John Gatins; his sister, Dympna Walsh; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, James Gatins.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-8 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday at 10 am at St. Denis Church followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery.
