Obituary for Julia "Nana" Reichard

TOWN OF FISHKILL – Julia Reichard, nee Pafundi, passed away on July 4, 2018.

Born on August 21, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, Julie (Nana) was the youngest of six children born to Josephine and George Pafundi. When she was 16 years old, she met the love of her life, Frederick Reichard, and married him on June 2, 1941. Frederick (Pop) predeceased her in 2009.

Julie spent much of her life living in her beloved Baldwin, Long Island, before moving to Fishkill in 2006. She adored children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and worked as a nanny for several families, who treasured her gentle and loving care. In her free time, Julie enjoyed hooking rugs, reading, and baking. She learned to can vegetables, tomato sauce, and pickles, using the fresh crops from Pop’s garden.

More than anything else, Nana loved to sing and to listen to music. She was proud of the “degree” she earned from Kay Kyser’s Kollege of Musical Knowledge. She had a beautiful singing voice and knew the lyrics to hundreds of songs. She sang with the St. Christopher’s Roman Catholic Church choir and the Long Island Chorale. She was thrilled to perform The 1812 Overture at West Point with the Chorale. She enjoyed watching movie musicals and loved attending concerts and Broadway shows.

Nana is survived by two daughters, Marion McCullough of Fishkill and Judith McElroy and her husband James of Wappingers Falls; four grandchildren, Timothy McCullough and his wife, Mary, of Wayland, Massachusetts, Laura Becker and her husband, Theodore, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Christopher McCullough of Baldwin, New York, and Shannon Banda and her husband, Ryan, of Poughquag, New York; ten great-grandchildren, Jack and Matthew McCullough, Katherine and Allison Becker, Kyle, Julie, Peter, and Autumn McCullough, and Kaeleigh and Evan Banda. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Julie was predeceased by her siblings Anthony Pafundi, George Pafundi, William Pafundi, Josephine Santorelli, and Loretta Mastrangelo.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 6, from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 8 pm at McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on on Saturday, July 7, at 10:00 am at St. Mary Mother of the Church Roman Catholic Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill, and interment will immediately follow at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
