Katherine Jeanne  Mutter
Katherine Jeanne Mutter, 91, of Poughkeepsie, NY died peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on September 2nd, 2018.

A lifelong Poughkeepsie resident, Jeanne was born on September 10th, 1926 to the late Mr. Fredrick Meier and Mrs. Margaret Downes Meier. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1944 and subsequently completed nursing school at Saint Francis Hospital in 1947. She pursued undergraduate studies at Catholic University of America in Washington DC where she was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing in 1953. She was the first in her family to attend College.

After receiving her degree from Catholic University, she worked at the National Institutes of Health caring for cardiac patients during the early years of open heart surgery. She later returned to Poughkeepsie to help care for her mother and worked as a nurse at SUNY New Paltz and Vassar Brothers Hospital.

In 1964 she married Dr. Walter Edward Mutter, an MIT educated physicist employed by IBM. Following the birth of her two children, she was a full time homemaker and worked part time as a visiting nurse and at the Vassar College Student Health Center. She also volunteered for Meals On Wheels for many years.

Her passions included gardening, education, food, the arts, travel and her family. She was a Certified Horticulturist and active in the Parent Teacher’s Association of the Poughkeepsie Schools. A lifelong learner she was an avid reader and a dedicated participant in the Center for Lifetime Studies educational programs. She was also proud of her Irish heritage and obtained Irish citizenship in 1994.

She is predeceased by her husband Walter who died in 1984 and her sister Margaret Walsh of Melbourne Florida who died in 2017 as well as her grandson Luke Mutter. She is survived by her brother Mr. Alfred Meier and his wife Mrs. Jane Meier of Falmouth Massachusetts, two sons and their wives, Dr. Walter Peter Mutter and Dr. Cynthia Anne Korzelius of Boston, MA, and Mr. Paul Michael Mutter and Mrs. Caroline Bridget Mutter of New York, NY as well as her four beloved grandchildren, Liam, Colin, Tiger and Daxton.

A Catholic Service in celebration of her life will be held at Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY on Saturday, September 8th at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow the service at Beekman Arms Inn, 6387 Mill Street, Rhinebeck, NY. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in a family plot at Saint Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx. Arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc.
