Obituary for John E. Nevins
John E. “Jack” Nevins, 78, died on December 9, 2018 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
He was born in Wappingers Falls, NY in 1940 and grew up in Beacon, NY where he met his loving wife of 55 years Mary McVeigh Nevins. He was the son of Katherine Morris Nevins and Wilfred P. Nevins, and brother to Daniel Nevins of Beacon, NY. Jack graduated from Siena College in 1962 and then graduated from Georgetown Law School with a Masters and Doctorate in law. Jack served as litigation attorney with the National Labor Relations Board in Washington D.C., but most of his career he served as VP/Chief Counsel for General Foods USA.
Jack was active in the United Way in Westchester County and Ocean County serving on the Board of Directors. Jack and Mary were passionate members of the Marriage Encounter and Cursillo programs for many years and met so many close friends along the way. After retiring, Jack provided pro bono legal work for the poor in Ocean County, NJ for 20 years, working out of St. Francis Center in LBI, NJ. Jack received the Humanitarian Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service from the Ocean County Council of Agencies. What touched him most was the Humanitarian Award he received from Siena College where he and Mary developed a deep love for the Holy Name Franciscan Order which continues to this day.
Jack is survived by his loving wife Mary McVeigh Nevins of Wappingers Falls, NY; daughters Colleen Nevins Gabler and her husband Mark Gabler of Easton, Maryland, Maureen Nevins Dennett and her husband James Dennett of Fishkill, NY; son John Edward Nevins Jr. and his wife Phyllis Nevins of New Fairfield, Connecticut; sister-in-law Sharon R. Nevins of Beacon, NY and many cousins. He has 9 beautiful grandchildren Jade, Haleigh, Morgan, Nevin Dennett; Walter, Steven, Samuel Gabler; Jake, and Dana Nevins; and will always be remembered as “Poppy”.
Jack enjoyed swimming in the ocean at Long Beach Island, attending church services, playing tennis and basketball, traveling (especially to Ireland), listening to Sinatra, HAPPY HOUR, and his family. Mary is the love of his life and he always remained her soulmate.
Jack will be remembered for his commitment to serving others, devotion to family, community service, generosity, and being a role model for others to follow in living a blessed and selfless life.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 3-8pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday at 11am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
