Mary Teresa Byrne, a local area resident since 2005 and formerly of Staten Island & Brooklyn, passed away at the Wingate at Beacon on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. She was 99.
Daughter of the late Michael and Bridget (O’Shea) O’Neill, she was born in Manhattan on October 14, 1920. In 1941, Mary began working for Emigrant Savings Bank as a bank teller. She worked her way up through the company ranks and became Executive Secretary, retiring in 1982.
On August 19, 1956, she married Wilford J. Byrne at Holy Name Church in Brooklyn. She was predeceased by her husband on March 27, 1981.
Following Wilford’s death, Mary relocated to Staten Island, where she resided for 20 years until moving to Fishkill to live with her niece.
Survivors include her nephews: Joseph O’Neill & his wife Joy of Florida, Eugene O’Neill & his wife Christina of New Jersey, and Patrick O’Neill & his wife Christine of Campbell Hall; her niece, Mary Chin & her husband Homer of Fishkill; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; seven great-great nieces and great-great-nephews; as well as many other loving relatives & friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was also predeceased by her brother, Michael O’Neill (1982) and his wife Verna (2001); her niece, Margaret DeFiore (2005) and her husband Anthony (2000); her nephew, Michael O’Neill (2020); and her infant sister, Anna O’Neill (1926).
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 27 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Queens.
