POUGHKEEPSIE – Michael Joseph Ellsworth Jr, 57, a longtime Hudson Valley resident, died on July 31, 2020 at home after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. Born in Mount Kisco on August 14th, 1962, he previously lived in Mahopac.

Michael was a loving husband, father and son. On August 13, 1989 in Yonkers, Michael married Janet (Neary) Ellsworth who survives at home. He is also survived by his daughters, Kathleen Ellsworth of Washington, DC and Rebecca Ellsworth of Austin, TX; his parents, Michael J Ellsworth, Sr and Barbara Ellsworth of Pleasant Valley; his brothers and their spouses, Robert and Jessa Ellsworth of Pleasant Valley and Joseph and Jennifer Ellsworth of Wayne, NJ; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul Neary and Angela Corbo of New City; and many nieces and nephews.

Michael had been employed as a Senior Technical Staff Member at IBM in Poughkeepsie, where he worked for over 30 years. Michael was a Master Inventor with over 300 patents, and was the winner of the 2020 Alan Kraus Thermal Management Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for a lifetime of thermal innovation. Second only to his family, Mike loved skiing, good Scotch, and the NY Mets. Michael also had great taste in music and his iTunes playlist was legendary at get togethers with friends and family. His memory lives on in all the joy he gave to those who loved him.

My deepest sympathy to the Ellsworth family at this time of sorrow. Like several others who have posted, I am a longtime IBM colleague of Mike's. We worked together for many years while we both were in Fishkill and then reconnected when I moved into an office around the corner from his in Poughkeepsie several years ago. Mike was always friendly, had countless innovative ideas (befitting his Master Inventor status!) and always willing to help his colleagues - especially with patenting. On numerous occasions we would recruit Mike to share his insights on patenting and especially on the path to Master Inventor to groups of IBMers. It's impossible to estimate the number of IBMers that Mike inspired to follow his passion for innovation.

He will be greatly missed by the IBM team, but his influence and inspiration will continue to be felt. May fond memories provide comfort to Mike's family and friends during this difficult time.

My deepest condolences to the entire Ellsworth family with your loss of Mike and my prayers and best wishes as you manage through this most difficult time. I had the pleasure meeting Mike over 20 years ago and prior to joining IBM and then serendipitously once becoming on board. Selfishly, some of my most enjoyable moments were our one on ones and the free-flowing of ideas, thoughts and experiences. As noted, Mike was a passionate inventor, and, again, selfishly, I am lucky to have co-invented my 1st IBM patent with Mike ... an experience I shall never forget! He touched so many and I am fortunate to be counted amongst the masses.

My prayers and best wishes and may your cherished memories provide relief and comfort, John

My heart goes out to Janet, Kathleen and Rebecca and all Mike's family and friends. I had the pleasure of working with Mike for quite a few years at IBM. He was a truly caring human being with an amazing intellect. He was passionate about his work and was always committed to helping his colleagues and IBM as a company. From my earliest interactions with Mike, I had a deep respect for him. He never had any "hidden agendas" and never played politics. He was just a genuinely good person. I am so saddened to see such a wonderful man die at such a young age. Mike will be greatly missed by all.

It was a privilege to have known Mike. Occasionally Mike and I had conversations about technical matters at IBM, but more often than not we spoke about skiing. Sometimes about places each of us were planning to ski at next, and other times comparing notes about mountains we had skied recently. We even got to ski together at Hunter mountain a number of years ago. Mike will be greatly missed by all of us who knew him. I offer my condolences to the Ellsworth family at this most difficult time.
