Obituary for Patrick Joseph Sheehy

On Nov 9th., Patrick Sheehy of Wappingers Falls, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 75 years old.

Patrick immigrated to the United States in 1964. He and his future wife, Margaret Desmond, later returned to Ireland to share their wedding with both families. The years sped by. He was a member of the AOH, Division 9 and an avid fan of the hurling and football matches in Gaelic Park. Eventually, the Sheehys, now proud parents of four children, moved north to Wappingers Falls. He owned and operated a plumbing and heating business locally for 35 years. He was liked and respected and known as “someone you can count on”. When he was called at 3am in sub-freezing weather because of frozen water lines or no heat, if it were humanly possible he responded. His customers became lifelong friends and became part of our family-support system during his illness.

Patrick was born in Ballinabearna, NewcastleWest, Co. Limerick, Ireland and was one of eight children of Michael Sheehy and Julia (Collins) Sheehy. He is survived by his brother, Jack in Australia. His brothers, Bill and Timmy predeceased him, as did his sisters Mary, Catherine and Julia. Julia’s funeral took place in Birmingham, England on Nov. 10th. They are all reunited and in the arms of our merciful Lord.

For four pain-filled years, Patrick battled Stage 4 cancer. He did so with determination and with unwavering good cheer. His courage and his innate ability to “always keep the bright side out” provided all who knew him an example of indomitable courage and endurance.

Asked once to describe himself in two words, he said: Catholic and Irish

He will always be forever missed by his wife of 54 years, his children Julia, Catherine, Mary and Colleen, his sons-in-law, Benjamin Biber and Chris Cotroneo, and by his grandchildren, Conor, Tyler, Clara, Sophia and Eileen.

Sadly, because of the dreaded virus, we do not dare hold a public wake. Mass will be celebrated in St. Columba’s at noon on Friday, Nov. 13. The funeral will take place in Ireland.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make donations in Patrick’s name to the Hospice Foundation of America (https://hospicefoundation.org/) or the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/).
