Obituary

STAATSBURG – Ethel M. Rao, 78, died unexpectedly on December 2, 2020 at her home.

Born in Tarrytown on October 11, 1942, she was the daughter of the late James and Ethel (Hall) Corry. A resident of Staatsburg since 2013, she formerly lived in Hopewell Junction where she was a parishioner of St. Columba Church.

On January 17, 1971 in Tarrytown, Ethel married Louis “Steve” Rao who predeceased her on June 25, 2001. She is survived by her children and their spouses, James and Jennifer Rao, Steven and Christine Rao, Lisa Rao and Colleen Rao; her grandchildren, Serena Liccardi and her fiancé Trevor Dhalla, Jacob Rao, Brendon Martin, Justin Rao, Dylan Rao, Zachary Rao and Dominic DeSalvo; her great-grandson, Landon Dhalla; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also predeceased by her sister Margaret Herguth.

Ethel had a true heart of gold. She was loved by everyone she encountered and will always hold a special place for her “children” she cared for, for many years. She also loved her “Worley Homes” family and her special pups Max and Sweetie. She blessed so many people’s lives and will forever be sorely missed.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2-5pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 10am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction.

Memorial donations may be made to the Dutchess County SPCA. Please visit Ethel’s Book of Memories at www.mchoulfuneralhome.com.

I was about 12 years old when I first got the chance to meet Ethel Maude. It was Halloween and Colleen and I were given the task to take Toni and Denny out trick or treating. Ethel welcomed me with open arms from that very first visit. There were so many days that I would find my way to the Rao house on Elk Rd. Sometimes I'd even walk the distance, just to feel the safety and love of mom Rao. She was always laughing and finding ways to make others laugh. She has so many kids!!! Today, the world seems a little less bright and cheery. Today, my heart breaks for Jimmy, Steven, Lisa, and Colleen. Losing a mother is like losing one's roots. Mom is the one that holds the fabric of family together. My love, prayers and hugs to the ENTIRE family: children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, daughters-in-law, children she picked up along the way, cousins, and everyone that was blessed to have had any time with this truly brilliant, beautiful and loving woman! I am so very sorry I could not be there with you.

Ethel was a very unique person. She welcomed just about anybody into her home and showered them with love. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren, even all of her “adopted “ children and grandchildren. She was not only a friend for 44 years, she was family. I’m sending condolences to her family and all that knew her and loved her. We will all miss her terribly. I’m hoping with all my heart that she’s sitting on the other side of the pearly gates eating stuffed shells and ziti with Steve, Margaret, Rita, Tom, Dick, her Mom & Dad and of course Elvis! I know that would make her so happy.
