Obituary

Fishkill – Dennis W. Newman, 73, a long time resident and formerly of Massapequa Park, passed peacefully at home on January 6, 2021.

Born in Rockville Centre on March 30, 1947, he was the son of the late William Patrick and Iris (Strong) Newman. Dennis received his master’s degree from St. John’s University. As a commercial insurance broker, he had been employed during his long career by Royal Insurance, Marshall & Sterling, and Eifert, French, & Ketchum Insurance and Risk Management in Pelham. He was also a versatile and engaging adjunct professor of Insurance Brokerage at Dutchess Community College. He loved to teach.

Dennis was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church. He served for several years as the President of the Fishkill Little League in the 1980s, and helped hundreds of young people to enjoy the game of baseball. Dennis was an avid golfer who made his first hole in one just two years ago. Dennis also loved the ocean, surfing, sailing, motorcycles and sportscars.

On May 24, 1970 in Long Island, Dennis married Sheila Nathanson, who predeceased him on February 28, 2014. He is survived by his sons and their wives, William and Jean Newman of Verbank, and Matthew and Alicia (Backus) Newman of Ballston Spa; his grandchildren, Lauren, Ryan, Emma and Caden; his brother, William Lionel Newman and his wife Donna; and his niece and two nephews Kristan, Jonathan, and Ryan. Dennis was also blessed with his loving partner, Deborah Steger, and her family, including her daughters Erica Steger and Amanda Schweizer, her husband David, and their daughter Brooke.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 10am-12pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc. 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. There will be a funeral service at 12pm and interment will follow in Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

PLEASE NOTE: In compliance with NYS guidelines, social distancing and face masks will be required. Since capacity may be limited, all attendees should be prepared for potential extended waiting periods.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Please visit Dennis’ Book of Memories at www.mchoulfuneralhome.com.

Dennis was friend and mentor to me over the years. He was supportive to me during my career and I will always be grateful to him. He gave freely of his time and expertise and was always willing to help whenever he was needed. He had a gift of wit and a great sense of humor and he always made me laugh. Dennis was genuine and treated all of our staff at the NYAIP with caring and respect. He made sure to stop and say hello to everyone when he came to the office. I will miss him.

Dennis was the most memorable insurance professional I ever worked with in the Hudson Valley. Plus, he had a great sense of humor and was an ideal team mate and eventually manager of the Insurance Broker training locally. I know his family always meant a lot to him. Because he always seemed to accomplish things effortlessly, it did not mean that he did not put a lot of himself into caring for the people behind the projects that he managed. He will be sorely missed!
