Obituary for Dennis W. Newman

Fishkill – Dennis W. Newman, 73, a long time resident and formerly of Massapequa Park, passed peacefully at home on January 6, 2021.

Born in Rockville Centre on March 30, 1947, he was the son of the late William Patrick and Iris (Strong) Newman. Dennis received his master’s degree from St. John’s University. As a commercial insurance broker, he had been employed during his long career by Royal Insurance, Marshall & Sterling, and Eifert, French, & Ketchum Insurance and Risk Management in Pelham. He was also a versatile and engaging adjunct professor of Insurance Brokerage at Dutchess Community College. He loved to teach.

Dennis was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church. He served for several years as the President of the Fishkill Little League in the 1980s, and helped hundreds of young people to enjoy the game of baseball. Dennis was an avid golfer who made his first hole in one just two years ago. Dennis also loved the ocean, surfing, sailing, motorcycles and sportscars.

On May 24, 1970 in Long Island, Dennis married Sheila Nathanson, who predeceased him on February 28, 2014. He is survived by his sons and their wives, William and Jean Newman of Verbank, and Matthew and Alicia (Backus) Newman of Ballston Spa; his grandchildren, Lauren, Ryan, Emma and Caden; his brother, William Lionel Newman and his wife Donna; and his niece and two nephews Kristan, Jonathan, and Ryan. Dennis was also blessed with his loving partner, Deborah Steger, and her family, including her daughters Erica Steger and Amanda Schweizer, her husband David, and their daughter Brooke.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 10am-12pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc. 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. There will be a funeral service at 12pm and interment will follow in Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
