Obituary

William (Bill) Maher Jr., 58, a longtime resident of the Hudson Valley, passed away from complications after cancer surgery, on February 19, 2021.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife Debbie; his daughter Alyssa; his daughter Danielle and son-in-law Devin; his mother-in-law Dorothy; his siblings and their spouses, Stephen and Stacey Maher, Theresa Jordan, Cathy and Karl Juhn, Eileen and Ricky Montross; and many loved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill is also predeceased by his sister Mary.

Bill loved his job as a Metro North train engineer, and leaves behind many close friends and co-workers. He enjoyed working on cars, barbecuing, woodworking, traveling the country with his wife, sending and making memes, and always had a smile on his face when he was around his deeply loved friends and family. He had a wealth of knowledge on many topics and was always ready to lend others a hand.

Visitation will take place from 2pm to 6pm, with funeral service to follow at 6pm, on Wednesday, February 24th at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Why - I ask myself - the loss of such a wonderful example of the Maher family is so hard to believe. My late husband Chuck and I have been friends with the Maher family for so many years and we have had the pleasure of watching Bill grow up into the best. My family and I offer our prayers and. sincere condolence to you all . Nancy Betz and family

Bill was always a very helpful and friendly neighbor. While coating our driveway I ran out of material. Before I could finish, I ended up in the hospital. During my stay there Bill came over and finished the job. When I completed building the work boat for the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse he came over with his semi, loaded it and delivered it to Kingston for launching in the Hudson River. Bill went out of his way to help others. We will miss his smiling face and friendship.

Moving into our house - Bill and Deb were one of the first neighbors we met! Our kids grew up together, the adults grew up together and great friendships were made! We loved being able to travel together and will never forget that Bill helped save our house from major disaster when the kitchen caught on fire! He was a friend and hero to so many! Our love and sympathies go out to Deb, Alyssa, Danielle, Devon, Dot and the rest of his family.
