Obituary for Maria DeMelo
WAPPINGERS FALLS – Maria DeMelo, 88, died at home surrounded by her family on February 20, 2021.
Born in Portugal on May 9, 1932, Maria was the daughter of the late Jose Augusto Fernandes and Ana Maria de Barros Pinto Fernandes. She immigrated to the United States in the early 1960's and moved to Wappingers Falls 40 years ago.
Maria is survived by her children, Paula DeMelo-Barone of Wappingers Falls and Nelson DeMelo of Hopewell Junction; her grandchildren, Michael and Daniella Barone and Isabella and Nelson DeMelo; her siblings, Jose Fernandes, Antonio Fernandes, Carlos Fernandes, Margarida Bernardes, and Aurora Fortunas; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John DeMelo, Licinio DeMelo, Alice Soares, Elsa DeMelo, and Teresa de Carvalho; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, Maria was also predeceased by her husband, Nelson DeMelo in 1981; her sister, Maria das Neves Silva; her brother-in-law, Mario Melo; and her sister-in-law, Celeste Alves.
Her family will always remember her as the Matriarch of the family who was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter-in-law, Godmother, aunt, cousin and friend.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 7-9 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday at 10 am at St. Columba Church followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery. PLEASE NOTE: In compliance with NYS guidelines, social distancing and face masks will be required.
