Obituary

Matte L Wallace, 86, a resident of Hopewell Junction since 2014, and previously of South Lake Tahoe and San Diego, California, fell asleep in death on Monday, May 31, 2021 at home surrounded by her family.

Born in Clinton, Oklahoma on November 23, 1934, Mattie was the daughter of Doc and Irene Murphy. On June 4, 1951, in Tacoma, Washington, Mattie married the love of her life, Edward Wallace, who preceded her in death on January 21, 2007.

Mattie is survived by her children Rene Woods and her husband Tyrone of Los Angeles, California, Vicki Wallace of San Marcos, California, and Karen Girven and her husband Dexter of Hopewell Junction. Her siblings Ella Jean Edwards, Hura Doc Murphy, James R Murphy, Stanley W Murphy, and Arthur K Murphy. Her 16 grandchildren, Deondra Johnson, Sheri, Cori, Amena, Dennis and Heather Hamilton, Andre and Aaron Mellion, Cerone and Krista Woods, Mark and Ena Brown, Kevin Ghee and Dexter Girven Jr, Terry and Timothy Wallace, 24 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Edward Terry Wallace, and her 3 grandchildren Izayah Amir Hamilton, Jeffrey Jason Brown and Torchea Le Ann Wallace, and her siblings Cleta Mae Cross and Phillip R Murphy.

Mattie loved travel and nature, that is what led her to move to beautiful Lake Tahoe. She was an avid reader; her favorite author was Barbara Taylor Bradford. She also loved poetry. She was a great dancer and loved dancing with her husband. Their last dance was during a trip to Nassau, Bahamas. They truly enjoyed themselves, they danced and sang at the piano. They made a great pair. She also loved boating and fishing, she liked to enjoy herself with family and friends, she also loved her husband's home cooked meals.

She was loved and always taught her children and grandchildren to love and honor Jehovah God. She was a faithful servant of Jehovah and was baptized in 1963, she shared her knowledge and wisdom with thousands of people going door to door and house to house. She started studying the Bible 64 years ago. She was in the pioneer service for 42 years, even in the final days and hours of her life, she continued to spread the good news of Jehovah’s kingdom. She was a very happy and positive person and was beautiful in every way.

We love you Aunt Mattie and will miss you. In our hearts and thoughts you will be with us always. When I think about you these two scriptures capture the essence of you. 1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me." Proverbs 31:25(amp ver) Strength and dignity are her clothing and her position is strong and secure; And she smiles at the future [knowing that she and her family are prepared]. You are forever in our heart ❤️ Love Butler and Wallace Family

Mattie was my mother’s (Faye) teacher and friend. She always made us feel like we mattered and we’re a part of her family when we had the pleasure of being in her company. To know her was to love her. Truly. Everything about her was something to be imitated. The way she taught, how she treated people, her zeal and most of all her love for Jehovah. That loved caused her to be patient, caring and kind. Fun too! Those qualities were passed on to her family as well. May their loss soon be replaced with the joy of being with Mattie again, as promised. Something we all look forward to.💛

(Sharing Sharon Porter's memories about Mattie.)
Returning to San Diego as a young adult, I began studying the Bible with Mattie. She was one of the best teacher I had ever had. She will always be truly loved, and I'm thankful for the time and patience she gave me as well as enriching my Bible knowledge. I want to offer my condolences to all the family and to all who were close to our dear sister!
Loving Thoughts,
Sharon Porter

Mattie will always be in my fondest memories. I will always remember being a new study in the Kingdom Hall and when I would hear Her comments I would think, I want to be like Her. She didn't even know Me but I knew clearly who She was. I was right, from around 1980 when I started attending meetings until 1985 when I left San Diego, Mattie was my example of what a true Pioneer was. She was my role model for all my years of serving Jehovah. I will truly long for the day to see Her again. There was never a time that I reflected on Her zeal that I did not feel so much love for Her. Always Positive always Zealous for our GOD Jehovah. I think of Her often and was glad for the times I was able to speak with Her through the years.

I miss my grandma...she was always one of the most pleasant people I knew...I used to always want to go with her to the used stores so she could look for antiques..me and my cousins enjoyed relaxing with her in her backyard and watching the ducks enjoy their time...my grandma loved ducks, they had a few of them before they moved to Lake Tahoe....her and Papa always gave the best hugs and their kitchen always smelled of love ❤️ she will truly be missed
