Obituary for Edward J. "Ed" Rice

Edward “Ed” Rice, a Hopewell Junction resident since 1972, formerly of Yonkers and the Bronx, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 85.

Son of the late Bernard and Margaret (McGuire) Rice, he was born in the Bronx on February 25, 1936. In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his nation during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged as Corporal in 1956.

Ed worked as a service technician for several utility and oil companies prior to his retirement from Love Effron in 1998. He was a parishioner of St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Council 4065. An avid golfer, he was also a New York Mets and Washington Redskins fan. More than anything else, Ed cherished spending time with his family. He was always the biggest supporter of his grandchildren, cheering them on at sporting events.
On December 8, 1956, he married Catherine Fusco at St. Frances of Rome Church in the Bronx. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, of 64 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Cathy Oliva & her husband Nick of Hopewell Junction; his grandchildren, Jennifer Hewitt & her husband Paul, Vincent Provenzano, Nicole Chappas & her husband James, Alyssa Oliva, and Michael Oliva; his great-grandchildren, Collin, Daniella, Cameron, and Victoria; and many other loving relatives & friends.

Ed was predeceased by his son, Edward Rice, in 2001; as well as his brother, Bernard “Red” Rice and his sister, Peggy Kirk.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22 at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23 at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 24 at St. Denis Cemetery, 604 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction.
