Obituary for Richard Joseph Dunn

Hopewell Junction – Richard Joseph Dunn, age 75, a Hopewell Junction resident since 1986, passed away at Vassar Brothers Medical Center on July 21, 2022. He was born on June 11, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Dorothy Dunn. On October 25th, 1969, at St Mary’s Church in Newport, Rhode Island he married the love of his life Mary (Cavanagh) Dunn.

Richard was a graduate of Archbishop Molloy High school in Queens, New York where he was not only the Captain of the Varsity Baseball Team , but is one of the only athletes to win four city championships in New York City high school sports history. He also played all four years for Jack Curran; one of winningest coach in High School Sports history for both basketball and football. Richard received his Bachelor’s Degree from St. John’s University in 1969, and his Master’s Degree from Iona College in 1975. He had a longtime career in the healthcare industry, beginning at Empire BCBS where he became the Key Executive in charge of all Taft Hartley and Government Programs from 1973 to 1990. He also worked for Merck Medco Pharmacy where he was the key executive in charge of all Taft Hartley and Government Programs from 1990 to 1995. In 1995 he decided to form his own Third Party Administrator called Summit Health Administrators where he was Founder & CEO, and worked with some of the largest Insurance carriers in the United States as their key claims processor. Summit was eventually sold and then Richard began a new business soon following called Cross-Summit Enterprises, which became one of the first comprehensive limited medical plans in the United States.

Richard had many hobbies including fishing, baseball and travel. He was very interested in conservative politics and was a Pro-Life advocate. He was a member of St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction. He was a volunteer for Catholic Charities as well as the Republican National Committee since he was 16 years old when he grew up in New Hyde Park, (Long Island) New York.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife Mary of Hopewell Junction; his son Kevin Dunn and his wife Barbara of Pompton Lakes, NJ; his son Ronald Dunn and his wife Nancy of Warwick, RI; his granddaughter Charlotte of Warwick, RI; his mother Dorothy Dunn of Charleston, SC; and his brother Kevin Dunn of Charleston, SC as well as a multitude of other family members and close friends.

He was pre-deceased by his father Joseph Dunn in 1997; his father in law Edward Cavanagh in 1990; his mother in law Teresa Cavanagh in 2008; and his Aunt, Francis Grieco in 2007.

A private burial will take place on Friday August 5th at St. Columba Cemetery 465 Brown Lane Middletown, Rhode Island 02842.
