Obituary for Ellwin "Butch" Smith

Hopewell Junction – Ellwin “Butch” James Smith, age 79, passed away on September 8, 2022. Words cannot express how much he had touched everyone’s lives with his generosity, appreciation and always being there throughout many generations. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

“Butch” will be lovingly remembered by his family including his wife, Patti Brown-Smith; his son, Brian Smith and his girlfriend, Stefanie Muhr; his grandsons, Ryan Smith and Ross Smith; his stepson, Bryer Hawley; his brother, Raymond Smith; his sister-in-law, Diane L. Smith; his nieces and their families, Shelly and Craig Winters, and Jennifer and Stephen Volk; and many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Julia Smith; his sister, Vivian Smith; and his brother, William H. “Bill” Smith.

Butch was born in Poughkeepsie on May 29, 1943 and attended Wappingers schools. He worked for many years for Bond Bread. He was also the owner and operator of Butch Smith Roofing and Siding. He was a life member of the Whortlekill Rod & Gun Club. He enjoyed golfing in the Time Out Golf League, and playing softball with the Frankie’s Superette team. He was also the champion of his bowling league.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 19 at 11am at St. Denis Cemetery, 604 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction. Immediately following the burial, there will be a celebration of Butch’s life at the Whortlekill Rod & Gun Club, 540 Route 376, Hopewell Junction.
