Obituary for Doris Jean Graig

D. Jean Graig, age 94, passed away on November 8, 2022 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She was born in Kortright, NY to parents Walter J. and Doris (Roberts) Graig. She was raised in Gilbertsville, NY until her family moved to Yonkers when she was in high school. She graduated from Charles E Gorton High School, received her B.S. from SUNY New Paltz, her MS in Education from the CCNY, and her Administrative Degree from SUNY Oneonta.

Jean began her career as an elementary school school teacher before becoming the Director of Head Start and served as Principal for many years in several elementary schools in the Yonkers Public School System. After she retired as an administrator, she returned to teach kindergarten and become the Librarian at St Joseph's School in Yonkers. It was a career she truly enjoyed and she loved making lasting connections with her former students and teachers.

Jean relocated to this area in1989. She loved knitting, many of her creations being donated to charities such as Ronald McDonald House, watching "her birds" and gardening. She was a prolific reader and she passed her love of reading on to her family and many students. She loved her dogs that she had throughout the years, especially Mugsie, who passed a few years ago. Above all, she cherished time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren

Jean is survived by her beloved daughter Cynthia Spera and her husband Frank; her grandchildren: Walter Hamill and his wife Jaclyn, and Ian Spera and his wife Jessica; her great-grandchildren: Wylee Marie, Samantha Jean and Walter Louis, as well as her loving nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Walter and Doris; and her two brothers: Walter R. and Paul J. Graig; as well as her sister, Elizabeth Jane Bodamer.
Her loving family will celebrate her life privately. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.
