Obituary for Joseph William Mitchell

POUGHQUAG – Joseph William Mitchell, 92, an area resident for over 20 years, died peacefully at his home on March 22, 2023. He previously lived in Montrose.

Born in Buchanan on October 12, 1930, Joe was the son of the late Frederick and Catherine (Tuttle) Mitchell. He proudly served in the US Marines during the Korean War.

Joe retired in 1991 from IBM after 32 years of service at the Poughkeepsie and Yorktown locations. As Senior Engineer, he was proud of his 3 patents.

He was a dedicated member of the Poughquag United Methodist Church and was an avid golfer. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Frances (Albanese) Mitchell; his children and their spouses, Linda and Steve Maddox of Oregon, Mark and Ellen Mitchell of Hopewell Junction, and Miriam and Vincent Sciglio of Lake Peekskill; his grandchildren, Kristopher Maddox, Francis Maddox, Anthony and Rebecca Maddox, Melissa and Brian Nixon, Sarah and Alden Westerdale, Dominic Sciglio, and Alexander Sciglio; his great-grandchildren, Audrey Nixon and Emery Maddox; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Joe was also predeceased by his brothers, Fred Mitchell, Jack Mitchell, and Doug Mitchell.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82 Hopewell Junction. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 am at the funeral home followed by burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Verplanck with military honors.
