HOPEWELL JUNCTION - Susan H. Roger, 79, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2023.
Born in Passaic, NJ, on September 27, 1943, Susan was the daughter of Byron and Janet (Seeger) Halsted.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and a well-loved educator who touched thousands of lives. She enjoyed spending time in Florida and loved to travel, dance, garden and knit. Susan was an active member of the Loving Stitches group through the Hopewell Reformed Church, where she was a long-time member.
She had been a Boy Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader for her children’s troops when they were growing up, and helped many local Boy Scouts earn their Eagle Scout honors.
Susan attended Fox Lane High School in Bedford, NY, graduated from the University of Vermont in 1965 with a degree in education, and earned a master’s degree in elementary education from SUNY New Paltz.
She started her teaching career in Carmel Central School District, teaching 6th grade. That’s where she met her husband of 54 years, John A. Roger, Jr. They married on Aug. 4, 1968. Susan spent the bulk of her career teaching in the Wappingers Central School District, first in Gayhead Elementary and later at Van Wyck Junior High School, when the 6th grade was relocated there. She was the vice president of the Wappingers Congress of Teachers, as well as an elected representative of the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System. She lobbied in Albany in support of education and was the president of the Wappingers Congress of Teachers – Retirees.
Susan is survived by her husband John; her son John A. Roger III and his wife Tracy; her son Byron J. Roger and his wife Katie; her daughter Kerri R. Roger; her daughter Robin Sue Roger McKenzie and her husband Charles; and her grandchildren: Noah, Abigail, Miles, Liam, Amelia and Charlie; her sister Ellen Halsted; and her nieces, Lindsay Lowry and Lauren Ramondetta.
Calling hours will be on Monday, from 3-7 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A service will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Hopewell Reformed Church, at 143 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction, followed by a burial at Hopewell Cemetery.
