Obituary for Barbara Ann Argyle

Barbara Ann (Bottcher) Argyle
Hopewell Junction

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved, Barbara Argyle, who left us on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at the age of 88. A woman of grace, strength and compassion, Barbara touched the lives of many during her time with us. Her departure leaves an immense void in our hearts and in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Barbara was born on October 5, 1934 in Elmira, New York. Predeceased by her parents, James Frederick Bottcher and Frances Louise (Benson) Bottcher, her husband Dr. Bernell E. Argyle, daughter Kathy Sue Argyle and brother James F. Bottcher.

She enrolled in nursing school. However, that journey was short-lived when she met her life-long love, Dr. Bernell Edwin Argyle, who she wed on February 20, 1954. They spent their early wedded years moving to wherever Bernell continued his education. They then moved to Putnam Valley, N.Y. where they spent 25 years.

There, Barbara was a homemaker, caregiver, Girl Scout leader, and breeder of Shih-Tzus and goats. She also spent many years helping several doctors establish their medical practices. Bernell’s profession led them to travel around the world including Norway, Greece and Japan. Barbara was a devoted member and elder of her Presbyterian Church in Yorktown, N.Y. In July, 1995, Barbara and Bernell moved to Hopewell Junction, N.Y. where she resided until her passing. She then became a devoted member and servant of Hopewell Reformed Church. There, she served on a consistory. Barbara and Bernell were gracious hosts of the HRC Annual Picnic for many years.

She was an avid gardener, knitter and just loved being with her family. Barbara’s home was always filled with the aroma of delicious meals and her famous desserts, prepared using recipes from generations prior. Barbara was well-known for her apple pies, strawberry/rhubarb pies, coconut cookies, chocolate chip cookies and much more. Barbara also enjoyed spoiling and loving her animals.

Barbara is survived by her children; Jeanne Mack & husband Charles of Fishkill, The Rev. Laurie Argyle Spencer & husband Juan of Wappingers, Trish Fisher & husband Scott of Jefferson Twp, PA and Keith Argyle & wife Lisa of Hopewell Junction. Barbara also leaves behind nine grandchildren; Charles Mack IV, Benjamin Argyle, Rebecca Fisher-Negri, Patrick Fisher, Kelly Parte, Matthew Preisendanz, Kayla Argyle, Jenna Argyle and Jack Argyle. She also leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren, whom all lovingly referred to her as Amah.

Celebration of life service will be held Friday, June 16, at Hopewell Reformed Church located at 143 Beekman Road in Hopewell Junction. Family and friends are invited to join and celebrate Barbara's life starting at 1 p.m with the service at 3 p.m. and dinner following at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in Barbara’s honor to the Hopewell Reformed Church and/or Dutchess County SPCA.
