During his time in the Army he earned the National Defense Service Medal and an Army Sharpshooter Weapons Qualification Badge. Joseph was honorably discharged from active service in 1969.

It has been recognized by those close with Joe that he has been a hard worker, always providing for his family. Often he would work a second job to support his family, so his wife Doreen could raise their children at home.

Joe ended up being a world traveler, he started to see the world during his time in the army. After retirement he traveled extensively both internationally and within the country. Some of his personal highlights include Africa, Italy, the Bahamas, and Wildwood, New Jersey. Joe would keep photo albums larger than encyclopedias for each of his trips and was always excited to show his loved ones the albums.

When he wasn’t traveling, Joe enjoyed participating in a bowling league, completing daily word searches, watching the Yankees, and trying his luck to win big with the New York Lottery. He imparted his love of card games to his grandchildren. His grandchildren recall Joe “Grandpappy” Nole teaching them to play
games such as Rummy, Poker and Dominoes.
