Obituary for Marianne Catherine McGovern

Marianne Catherine McGovern, a local area resident for 15 years, passed away at home in Poughkeepsie, NY on Friday, November 10, 2023. She was 75.

Daughter of the late Francis X. and Evelyn (Hopwood) McGovern, Marianne was born in the Bronx on November 14, 1947. She was raised in Yonkers, NY, graduated from the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel in White Plains, NY, where she was a member of the high school basketball team. She later attended Berkeley School of Business in White Plains. For many years, she worked as an Executive Assistant for William Mercer, Inc. in Stamford, CT. Prior to moving to Dutchess County, she had previously resided in Bethel, CT, as well as Mahopac and Yorktown Heights, NY.

A devoted Catholic, Marianne will be remembered for her enduring spirit and “tough as nails” attitude. She remained strong-willed up until her final moments of life. Her children's most inspirational memory of her was when she courageously dove from her family’s boat into the Long Island Sound’s rough waters when she saw an overturned sailboat and swam to save a stranger who was drowning.

Marianne enjoyed countless hobbies such as reading, baking, decorating, and crocheting. She had a sincere passion for music and was a skilled pianist and enjoyed singing. Later in life, she decided to work in retail due to her love for shopping.

Above all else, she cherished being a grandmother and was affectionately known as “Nanny”.

Survivors include her children: Mary Pat Swanson & her husband Bruce of Brewster, NY, Robert Sammarco & his wife Christina of Hopewell Junction, NY, Theresa Hess & her husband Danny of Fishkill, NY, & her grandchildren: Tori Swanson, Michael Swanson, Nicholas Sammarco, Christopher Sammarco, Hailey Hess, Avery Hess ; her nephews, along with their families: Col.
