Obituary for Joan Marie Avon
Joan Marie Avon, age 77, passed away at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence on November 16, 2023 with her family by her side. She was born on October 23, 1946 in Somerville, New Jersey to the late Leo and Elizabeth (Lucash) Russo. On September 6, 1969 she married her husband William G. Avon. Together they raised their family and remained happily married for 37 years. William predeceased her in 2006.
Before her retirement in 2005, Joan worked at IBM in East Fishkill, NY for over 20 years, always trying to better herself through schooling and working endless hours while raising her two boys. Joan loved to listen to music and dance and she was a great racquetball player. Her family describes her as an eternal optimist who always saw the glass half full and saw the bright side of everything. It made her happy to put others comfort and happiness before herself. She appreciated the little things in life such as a glass of wine and listening to a good story from friends or family. Later in life, she enjoyed trips up to Saratoga with her partner Joe Derasmo.
Joan is survived by her beloved sons: Robert Avon and his wife April who reside in NY and William Avon and his wife Elizabeth of North Carolina; her beloved grandchildren: Hunter, Savannah, Chloe Grace, Zachary, and Danica; and her brother Leo Russo.
A Graveside Service will be held at 12 pm on Wednesday November 22, 2023 at Fishkill Rural Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of McHoul Funeral Home, Inc.
