Obituary for Constance Lucille "Connie" Hotaling

Constance “Connie” Lucille Hotaling neé Jennett went to her eternal rest on April 8, 2024. At 93, Connie was reunited with her beloved late husband, Edward Hotaling Sr, just one day after their 72nd wedding anniversary. She was surrounded by loved ones near and far at Hospice House in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Connie, daughter of P.E. and Lucille (Urban) Jennett, was born in Plattsburgh, NY, on July 25, 1930. She was the only girl, with two older brothers, Douglas and Richard, and one younger brother, Donald. Growing up in a time when women were discouraged from receiving education, let alone higher education, Connie’s mother, Lucille, was adamant that her daughter would go to college. Lucille’s unwavering commitment to her daughter’s right to education saw Connie graduate with her B.S. in 1952 from SUNY Plattsburg and later receive her Master’s in Education from C.W. Post Long Island University. Connie loved her mother more than words describe.

1952 also was the year she married her partner in crime, Edward, in Atoona, NY, right before he proudly served his country in the Korean War. While he was away, she sent letters of love and passion and couldn’t wait for him to return. They settled in Hopewell Junction, NY, and built a loving, funny, warm home for their three children.

Connie was the last teacher in a three-room schoolhouse in Hopewell Junction before it was consolidated with Wappingers Central School District. She organized the Community Methodist Nursery School and its teachers. In 1987, she retired from BOCES as a special education teacher after a 20-year career.

Connie and Ed retired on the same day and lived it up during their long and adventurous retirement. They traveled the world, making friends wherever they went. But, the best part of their retirement was being there for their family on every occasion, milestone, and celebration.

She is survived by her three children, who were the absolute joy of her life. Edward W. Hotaling Jr. (Carolyn) of Poughkeepsie, Donna (neé Hotaling), Doerrier (Mark) of LaGrangeville, Bruce B. Hotaling (Santia) of Fishkill.

Connie, or Nanny as she was affectionately called, is also survived by her six grandchildren whom she adored more than anything, and their life partners: Kendra Gleason (Justin Bruzgul) of Gardiner, NY; Sara (neé Doerrier) Naderi (Cyrus Naderi) of Hong Kong, SAR; Kyle B. Hotaling (Nichole Gange) of Wappingers Falls; Hannah Doerrier (Thalles Pereira) of Arlington, MA; Bruce E. Hotaling (Elaine Correa) of Hopewell, NY; and Emma Doerrier of Doha, Qatar. Connie is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Millicent, Maximilien, Adrien, and Eduardo.

Connie loved reading, cooking, arts and crafts, her cat, Pumpkin, and putting her money where her mouth was at the casino, often winning, sometimes big.

Calling hours will be held at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction on Saturday, April 13th, 2024, from 12 pm - 2 pm.

The family requests memorial donations be made in Connie’s name to Hudson Valley Hospice House, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, who took extraordinary care of Connie.
