Obituary for Joseph Francis Shepard

Joseph Francis Shepard, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in Vassar Brothers hospital on April 16th, 2024 at the age of 86.

He was born in a bedroom of his boyhood home in Mount Carmel, PA on February 7th, 1938 to Frances and Alexander Shupinski. In high school he wrestled and was elected a class officer for Mt. Carmel High’s class of 1952. He was the first in his family to attend college and studied chemistry and physics at nearby Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA. It was during his senior year at Susquehanna that he met and fell in love with a young “co-ed” named Mary Ann Traher.

They married in 1962 shortly after her graduation and remained happily married for the next 62 years.

His professional career spanned more than four decades, 32 of which he spent with IBM - first in Yorktown Heights, NY and later in East Fishkill, New York. He had a number of engineering and management roles along the way working on both logic and memory development. He was a prolific inventor, an enthusiastic technologist, and a member of the Senior Technical Staff. He loved his profession and the people he met along the way; throughout his career he would often tell his family just how lucky he was - and that, “Because I liked what I did, I never worked a day in my life”.

Joe was an avid sports fan and followed the Yankees religiously from the ‘50’s until today. He adopted the Jets in 1968. He was a runner and golfer, loved watching birds, current events, and drinking wine. He and his wife traveled the world, visited almost every continent, and taught his children the value in experiencing other people, languages, and cuisines first hand.

His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, and nothing brought him more pleasure and joy than spending time with his family. His happiest moments were spent when everyone was together. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and endless debate. His family cherished him and they will miss him enormously.

In addition to his devoted and loving wife, Mary Ann, Joe is survived by his daughter, Allison (Shepard) O’Connor and her husband, Daniel O’Connor of LaGrange, NY; his son, Joseph Shepard, Jr., and his spouse, Patricia (Landon) Shepard of Saratoga Springs, NY; his grandsons, Daniel O’Connor, Jr. (and his wife Kimberly Rivera-O’Connor) and Joseph O’Connor, both of Boston, MA. Joe’s great-granddaughter, Isabel Anne Rivera-O’Connor also survives with her parents.

Memorial services will be privately held for the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc. Please visit Joseph's Book of Memories at www.mchoulfuneralhome.com.
