Obituary

Alan F. McBrien, 65, of the Town of Beekman since 1996 and formerly of Kinderhook and Staten Island, died on Monday, March 12, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born in Staten Island on December 4, 1946, he was the son of Albert and Sylvia Barrella McBrien. Alan was employed as a Spanish teacher at Scarsdale High School for 33 years until his retirement in 2006. He was highly respected and loved by his students and colleagues. He was a parishioner of St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction. A highly educated man, he was bilingual and had a great knowledge of not only the Spanish language but the arts and cultures of the countries.

Alan and his wife loved the water and had boats on Lake George until 1996 when they moved to Dutchess County. Alan also loved the ocean where he spent time with his wife at the Atlantic Ocean in this country, as well as in the Atlantic off the coast of Spain and France. Alan had many good friends in both of these countries. He was an animal lover, and he and his wife rescued/adopted three dogs during their lives that he loved very much. They also rescued/adopted seven cats and the last two, Yorky and Cara, survive at home.

On September 28, 1968 in Staten Island, Alan married Blanca Quintana who survives at home. He is also survived by his sister, Norma Nebus of Fords, NJ; nephews, Gary and Arthur Nebus; nieces, Judy Darlington and Lori Froelich and their spouses; several great-nieces and nephews and great, great-nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
