Alfio Zirilli, 92, a Fishkill resident, formerly of Newburgh, Argentina and Sicily, died at The Elant at Wappingers Falls on Friday, May 4, 2012.
Born in Sicily, Italy on January 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Francesco and Santa Contarino Zirilli. While in Italy, Alfio served in the Italian Army during World War II and worked in a vineyard. He later moved with his family to Argentina, where he was employed at a textile factory. After arriving in the United States and moving to Newburgh, Alfio spent many years as a baker. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh.
In 1948, he married Rosa Longo in Sicily. Mrs. Zirilli survives at home.
Additional survivors include his daughter, Sandy Hathorn & her husband Kevin of Wappingers Falls; three grandsons, Brian deSa & his wife Katherine of Wappingers Falls, Alfie deSa & his wife Corinne of Fishkill, and Sean Hathorn & his wife Jessica of Fishkill; four great-grandchildren, Liam, Amelia, David and Cole; his siblings, Maria Bizzaro of Modena and Orazio Zirilli of Sicily; also many nieces, nephews and other loving family members & friends.
He was predeceased in death by two sisters, Vincenza & Nina, and a brother, Giuseppe Zirilli.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill, followed by interment at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
