Obituary

PAWLING - Amico R. Nurzia, a Dutchess County resident since 2000, formerly of Mahopac and Tuckahoe, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, December 8, 2023. He was 84. Son of the late Pietro and Emma (Taranta) Nurzia, he was born in Arischia, Abruzzo, Italy on May 27, 1939. As one of seven children, he grew up in a war-torn occupied village, and at four years old, his father died. When he was 15, he emigrated to the United States in search of the American Dream. With determination to succeed, Amico embraced a driving work ethic. As a construction worker and contractor, he founded Nurzia Contruction Corp. nearly 60 years ago and worked tirelessly until his health would no longer allow him to do so. Amico enjoyed making wine and canning tomatoes, and he loved teaching his family & friends to do the same. More than anything else, however, he cherished his family and especially loved being a grandfather to his beloved grandchildren and godfather to William Winters. In the fall of 1962, he met Margaret P. Drover. Margaret had herself emigrated to the United States from Glasgow, Scotland and shared the same values and dreams. On December 26, 1964, they married at the Assumption of Our Lady Church in Tuckahoe, NY. Margaret survives at home in Pawling. Additional survivors include his daughter, Eleanor Nurzia & her husband Kurt Gabrielson of Sharon, CT; his son, Peter Nurzia & his wife Mary of Fishkill, NY; his son, Michael Nurzia & his wife Lisa Pomeranz of New Caanan, CT; his grandchildren, Erik Gabrielson & his fiancé Paige Tully, Elliot Gabrielson, Peter Nurzia, Jr., Avery Nurzia, Zachary Nurzia, Max Nurzia, Alex Nurzia, and Maggie Nurzia; his sister, Pierina Commisso; his sister-in-law Antonina Nurzia; his brother-in-law, Luigi Ciano; his sister-in-law, Lorette Winters; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives & friends. In addition to his parents, Amico was also predeceased by five siblings, Gina DeSimone & her husband Virgil, Antonio Nurzia, Amalia Ciano, Ada Zaccagno, and Angelo Nurzia; as well as his brother-in-law, Cosimo Commisso, and his brother-in-law William Winters. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 14 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill, NY.
