WAPPINGERS FALLS - Anne M. Ropes, 88, died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 31, 2026.
Anne will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering spirit. She was a woman of deep faith and contributed her talents to the church, including the weekly counting, which she dearly enjoyed. Her legacy lives on through the amazing memories of her family and friends. She inspired those around her to explore the world and embrace life fully.
Anne was born on October 20, 1937 in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Fishkill, New York when she was nine years old. She was the daughter of William and Mary Morrison Prendergast. She is predeceased by her husband of 50 years Charles ("Chuck") A. Ropes, Jr.
While working in the mailroom at Texaco, Anne met Chuck. Their lifelong partnership began during a company-sponsored trip to Europe. Anne later worked for the Fresh Air Fund at Camp Hidden Valley at Sharpe Reservation. She elevated her role to chef and manager over the 25 years she worked there, serving meals to up to 200 people three times a day.
Anne loved being with people, whether it was entertaining guests, frequently hosting elaborate dinner parties or meeting them at a local brewery or restaurant. She was an avid cook, baker and chocolate maker. She was active in the Altar Rosary Society and loved spending time getting ready for the annual craft fair. She enjoyed her time with the Fishkill Seniors, especially if there was a casino trip involved. She had a special group of friends, "The Lunch Bunch' who have visited countless local restaurants where their laughter resonated throughout.
Traveling was a passion for Anne-she visited all seven continents, camped throughout the United States, and explored nearly all the U.S. National Parks. When not camping, traveling or visiting friends, she would have 'itchy feet' and would have to start planning future trips, always looking for friends to visit, or new places to see, good food to eat and fun things to do.
Anne regarded her family as her greatest achievement. She and Chuck raised five children: Linda Nevelus (Robert), Charles III (Lily), Mary, Jacqueline Bozeman (Michael), and Steven (Jen). She was a Girl Scout leader, attended countless sporting events of her kids and school activities, supporting her children every step of the way. She was also very crafty, she did needlepoint, crocheting and quilting. If you were lucky enough, you scored a baby quilt when your child was born.
She played an important role in her grandchildren's lives, providing an annual get together at Sandbridge Beach each July 4th for the past 26 years. Annually, she and Chuck took a group of grandchildren on camping trips across the U.S.A., introducing them to our beautiful country. Her active involvement left a lasting impact on Charlie, Zachary, Alex, Sally, Brittney, Austin, Sydney and Brayden Ropes; Meghan Aurich (Slinskey); Elizabeth, Donald, Amber (Adams), Curtis, and Ian Bozeman.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 8th from 3 - 7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., Hopewell Junction. The Altar Rosary Society will lead a Decade of the Rosary at 5 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial is being offered on Tuesday, June 9th at 10 am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery.
Rather than sending flowers, donations can be made to Hudson Valley Hospice. Please visit Anne's Book of Memories at www.mchoulfuneralhome.com.
