Arthur R. Grassi, 73, a resident of East Fishkill since 1988 and formerly of Patterson, died on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center after a valiant struggle with heart failure and lung disease.
Artie was born in Yonkers on May 10, 1941, the son of Raymond and Doris (Reynolds) Grassi. He served in the United States Navy and was also proud to serve the City of Yonkers as a firefighter. In addition, Artie owned his own exterminating business, was an avid gardener, and was a life-long, steadfast Red Sox fan.
His greatest love, however, was his family and he was for many years a devoted single father to his two beloved daughters, Nancy and Christine. Those who knew him respected and adored him for his integrity, honesty and strength of character. To reward him for his hard work and impeccable character, fate brought to Artie the love of his life, Catherine Van Aken Stanis, and they were married on November 15, 1986 in Carmel. During their 28 year marriage, Artie had the privilege and pleasure of helping his "Kate" raise her three wonderful children, Christine, Elissa and Gregory, whom he adored as his own.
Artie was predeceased by his parents; his stepmother, Beverly; and his sister, Janet Caggana. In addition to his wife Catherine, Artie is survived by his children, Nancy (Michael Filgate) Tagliafierro, Christine (Patrick) Magee, Christine Stanis, Elissa (Michael) Santarpia, and Gregory Stanis; his grandchildren, Julia, James, Teresa, Mia, Tara, Andrew, Michael and Ava, as well as his brothers, William Grassi and Ray Grassi, and several nieces and nephews.
Artie was a quiet man of few words, but if actions speak louder than words, Arthur's constant expression of love for his family throughout his too short life was deafening.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 1-4pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
