Obituary

WAPPINGERS FALLS-Artur M. Filipowicz, 86, an area resident since 2001 and formerly of Union, NJ, died on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

Born in Poland on July 25, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph and Barbara (Wolodzko) Filipowicz. On November 28, 1959 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Manville, NJ, Artur married Halina Macur. His loving wife of nearly 54 years survives at home.

During the Second World War, he was deported to Siberia, survived a Siberian Gulag, served as a member of the Polish Army under the command of General Wladyslaw Anders in Iran, the Middle East and Palestine, and afterwards as a member of R.A.F. 300th (Masovian) bomber squadron at P.A.F./R.A.F. Faldingworth, Lincolnshire, England for the Polish Air Force and Royal Air Force from 1944 to 1947. After the war and after relocating from England to the U.S., he acted as President of the Northeast Chapter of the Polish Air Force Veterans Association.

Artur was employed as a Structural and Mechanical Engineer and Designer by Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) for 34 years until his retirement. Afterwards, he formed his own consultancy called Engineering Design Services (EDS) and continued to work for at least another 10 years. He was a parishioner at St. Joseph's Church in Poughkeepsie and previously at St. Casmir's Church in Newark, NJ.

In addition to his wife, Artur is survived by his daughters, Dana Y. Filipowicz-Bortz and her husband Arthur of Hopewell Junction and Arlena B. Filipowicz of London, England; his granddaughter, Diana E. Bortz; his cousins, Monika and Caroline Spisak; and many relatives in Poland and Russia.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 9:30 am at St. Joseph's Church, 9 Lafayette Place, Poughkeepsie followed by burial at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, 654 Ferry Road, Doylestown, PA.
