Poughkeepsie – Barbara Grover Pyne, a long-time resident of Poughkeepsie, passed away on September 16, 2021 at the age of 84. Born on August 2, 1937, she was the daughter of Elliott Edgar Grover and Ruth Hoffses Grover. She attended Classical High School in Springfield, MA where she was passionate about playing her violin and viola. She played in the Springfield Youth Symphony and on one very special occasion, played viola in a quartet at Carnegie Hall. She attended the University of Massachusetts where she received her Bachelor's Degree in education.
On June 17, 1962, Barbara married Roger S. Pyne, Jr. They raised four children: Richard, Robert, Nancy and Karen. Barbara was actively involved in her community for many years. She was the Nursery School Director at Vassar Road Baptist Church, was Treasurer of the League of Women Voters in the late 1960s, volunteered as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader, volunteered at the Second Hand Rose thrift shop, taught Sunday School, played violin with the Southern Dutchess County "Pops" Orchestra, was a member of the Dutchess County Home Bureau, and was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star—Cascade Vassar Chapter 347, NY. She was also a long-time member of Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church. She enjoyed many hobbies, including playing bridge, knitting, crocheting, hiking, traveling, reading, cooking and entertaining in her home. Many New Year's Eve parties were enjoyed at her home with her close neighborhood friends, the group of whom were very special to her.
Teaching and music were Barbara's passions in life, as were her family and friends. Making, keeping, and being a good friend were what life was all about to her. She treasured her time with family, especially the annual family trip to York Beach, Maine. She has been remembered by many for her handwritten letters of sympathy, encouragement, gratitude and simple well-wishes. She always knew how to bring a smile to people with an unexpected letter, usually signed with her signature smiley faces and accompanied by a newspaper clipping. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by her husband, Roger; their children, Richard (Katherine Perry-Pyne) Pyne, Robert (Missa) Pyne, Nancy (Jim) Thomas, and Karen (Shawn) MacNish; her ten grandchildren, Evan (Aaron Muller) Pyne, Olivia Pyne, Margaret Pyne, Eleanor Pyne, Sara (Duncan) Weinstein, Isaac Pyne, Courtland Thomas, Effie Thomas, Breck MacNish, and Sylvia MacNish; her sister, Elisabeth Grover; her brother, William Grover, and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
