Barbara
Tonnesen
September 23, 1965 – September 16, 2025
HOPEWELL JUNCTION - Barbara Ellen Tonnesen, 59, an area resident since 1993, died on September 16, peacefully in the comfort of her home. She previously lived in Putnam County.
Born on September 23, 1965, Barbara was the daughter of the late William and Joan (Fagan) Hand. She had been employed by Hudson Valley Credit Union for the last 5 years. Prior to that, she spent many years at Hopewell Hot Bagels, where she was known as a friendly and familiar face. Barbara was a devoted Christian whose values shaped the way she lived and cared for others. She instilled those same beliefs in her children, teaching them to live with love, integrity, and faith.
Barbara was an avid traveler with deep appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the world around her. She had the joy of visiting 49 of the 50 U.S. states, combining her love of adventure with time spent making lasting memories with family and friends. Whether exploring quiet towns or scenic landscapes, she cherished the journey as much as the destination.
On May 20, 1989, Barbara married her beloved husband, Steven Arvid Tonnesen, at Yorktown Heights Assembly of God. They shared 36 loving years together and he survives her at home.
She is also survived by her daughters and their spouses, Stefanie and Salvatore Ferrara of Bellmore, Kaitlyn and Gabriel Salameh of Buchanan, and Tara and Michael Caiazzo of East Rockaway; her stepchildren and their spouses, Sonja and Andrew Davies of Yonkers, and Andrew Tonnesen of Hoosick; her cherished grandchildren, Bennett Ferrara, Delaney Ferrara, Dylan Caiazzo, Mariel Davies, Cole Davies, and Brooke Tonnesen; and her siblings and their spouses, Patricia Fendorak of Whitehall, Raymond and Tracy Hand of Conway, SC, and William and Valerie Hand of Dallas, GA.
