Obituary

Barbara Joan Van Voorhis, a lifetime resident of Fishkill, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2023, she was 90 years old.

Born March 3, 1933 (3-3-33!), in Hopewell Junction, the daughter of Sylvan Eugene and Addie VanTassell Beasimer, she was a Hopewell Junction native who attended Hopewell grammar school and graduated in 1951 from Wappingers Central High School.

On July 31, 1951, in the Church of the Resurrection in Hopewell Junction, she married Garrett Richard Van Voorhis, the love of her life for 51 years.
Barbara was a retired bookkeeper of 35 years for Brinckerhoff & Neuville Insurance Group.

She was a former member of Hopewell Hose Fife, Drum and Bugle Corp, a founder of the Girls Softball Team "Charlie Browns" of the Town of Fishkill in the 1960's and was their coach for 6 years.

Barbara was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church of Fishkill where she served as president, secretary, treasurer, and service commissioner chair for many years of the Women's Guild, a former Sunday School teacher and youth group leader of the church.

She was a former member and treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary of Protection Engine Co. #1 of Fishkill, a former member and treasurer of the Town of Fishkill Republican party, and a former member of the Beacon/Fishkill Kiwanis.

Barbara and her husband Rich loved to travel and go camping. Barbara was an avid N.Y. Yankee fan, loved to cook, bake, play Bingo and cards with her grandchildren.
Barbara Van Voorhis is survived by her loving children, daughter Nancy and her husband Doug, Douglas Leggett of Beacon, son Gary Van Voorhis and wife Lori of Fishkill, son Raymond Van Voorhis and his wife Joan of Fishkill, daughter Barbara and her husband Jim Seguine of East Fishkill.

She is preceded in death by her husband Rich, her daughter, Betty Jean Canfield, and her 5 sisters and 7 brothers.

She is also survived by grandchildren: Garrett, Ryan, Molly, Rachel, Raymond, Nicole, Bart, Jenny, Lindsay, Jessica, Sam, and Luke, and great grandchildren: Colette, Samantha, Nathaniel, Sofi, Daniel, Cedar, Emily, Linden, Talon, Delaney, Rae Marie, Amelia, and Emry, and several nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to all of her Caregivers, the family truly appreciates all their help.

Visitation hours are 5:00-8:00 pm, Thursday August 17th, at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday August 18th at First Reformed Church of Fishkill, 717 US-9, Fishkill NY, followed by a burial at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
