WAPPINGERS FALLS - Benjamin Fontanez Vargas, 77, died on November 8, 2025 at New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. An area resident for over 11 years, he previously lived in the Bronx.

Born in Cayey, Puerto Rico on May 1, 1948, Benjamin was the son of the late Adrian Fontanez and Rosa Vargas Hernandez. He retired from New York Service Station Dealers of Greater New York in Yonkers after 15+ years of service.

He was proud to serve his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, earning several commendations and awards such as the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal. His loyalty to the Corps remained steadfast throughout his life, as he lived by their proud motto, "Semper Fi."

Benjamin is survived by his children, Benjamin A. Fontanez, Jr. and his wife Mariane, Richard Fontanez and his wife Jacqueline, and Bianca V. Fontanez; his grandchildren, Richard A. Fontanez, Angelina Fontanez, Jayden Fontanez, Brandon Fontanez, and Ariana Fontanez; his siblings, Robert Fontanez and Mary Fontanez; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Benjamin was also predeceased by his wife, Irma Fontanez in 2022.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to his sister-in-law, Barbara Pannazzo, for her compassion and dedication in caring for him.

Visitation will be held at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction on Friday, November 14th from 4 - 7 pm. The funeral service will be held at 7pm followed by military honors.
