EAST FISHKILL - Berthold "Bert" J. Schauer, 98, an area resident since 1996 and formerly of Hicksville, died peacefully on August 30, 2020 at his home.

Born on June 18, 1922 in Manhasset, NY, he was the son of Berthold and Elsie (Allen) Schauer. Bert proudly served our country in the US Navy during World War II. He had been employed by Grumman Aerospace Corporation in Bethpage.

Bert was a devoted husband and a wonderful dad. He loved life, his grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Always the life of the party, Bert could be found dancing and making everyone laugh with a quick joke or a funny story. He attended the Hopewell Reformed Church, the East Fishkill Senior Center and sang with the East Fishkill Choir at various events. He enjoyed golfing, the NY Mets, fishing on Long Island and at their home in Nova Scotia, and watching his hummingbirds from his porch. Bert was loved by all who knew him.

On May 17, 1946 in Port Washington, NY, Bert married Anita Swim who survives at home. In addition to his wife of 74 years, he is also survived by his daughters and their husbands, Gail and Robert Gardner, and Eileen and Wayne Poole; his grandchildren and their spouses, Justin and Lydia Poole, and Heather and Steve Goldfarb; his great-grandchildren, Josephine, Evan, Isabella and Mason; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Ruth, Dorothy "Dot", and Roy.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 11am at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington with military honors.

Bert was active with the Veterans at Castle Point. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or Wounded Warrior Project.
