Bertus F. Godfrey, 85, a Dutchess County resident since 1994, formerly of Westchester County and the Bronx, died at home on Wednesday, October 27, 2010.
Born in New Rochelle on June 2, 1925, he was the son of the late Lambertus and Elizabeth Lear Godfrey. A World War II Veteran, Bertus had served in the U.S. Army as a member of the Bomb Disposal Unit. He graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University and earned his Masters Degree from Rutgers University. After working at IBM for many years, he was employed by the accounting department of Kraft Foods, Inc., where he also worked for many years.
Bertus was predeceased by his loving wife, Mildred Gall, in 1992.
He is survived by four daughters, Janice Walsh and her husband Gabriel of White Plains, Joyce Swanson and her husband Jim of Sullivan County, Jeanette Godfrey of Fishkill, and Judith Davis and her husband Vincent of Hopewell Junction; his grandchildren, Brandon & Daniel Walsh and Andrea & Nicholas Swanson; also many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Church, 1925 Route 82, LaGrangeville, followed by interment with military honors at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla.
