Obituary

Missionary Betty Jane "Cookie" Gayle, age 75, of Wappingers Falls, NY since 2014 and a former residence of St. Alban's and South side Jamaica, Queens, NY, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, peacefully entered eternal rest on March 23, 2025, at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital.


Cookie was born on May 8, 1949, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Thomas L. Wilson and Betty Naomi (Wilson) Williams and was the cherished stepdaughter of the late Johnie H. Williams. She was predeceased by her siblings, Howard Williams, Theresa Wilson, and Jeanette Wilson, as well as her grandmother, Eugenie Tosh.


Cookie is survived by her loving daughters, Jeanine Gayle and Jeanette Cunningham; grandchildren, Janeice, Earl, Christopher and Jordan; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson, who blessed the family with five generations. She is also survived by her siblings: Johnie May Black, Garnetta Jones (Tony), Simmuel Williams, James Williams, Gerry Wilson, Kim Jones (Lewis), Martha Dunston, and Sharon Cook (Rickey); her sister-in-law, Doris Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.


Cookie graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Cambria Heights, NY, where she truly shined as an athlete. During her time there, she was an active participant in both track and field, as well softball. Her dedication and talent in sports were evident, making her a standout in the school's athletic programs.


Cookie dedicated 44 years of her life to the New York City Department of Sanitation, where she worked as a Civilian Clerk. Her dedication to public service began at the young age of 19 and touched the lives of many through her work. Her commitment and resilience were a testament to her character and work ethic.


Cookie's athleticism was evident from an early age as she excelled in track and field events during high school. Her competitive spirit carried over into her later years, where she enjoyed participating in events at the East Fishkill Senior Center. She was particularly known for her enthusiasm and energy, inspiring all who knew her with her infectious spirit.


A woman of deep faith, Cookie was an active member and missionary of the Guardian Fellowship in Jamaica Queens, NY, where she spent over 30 years serving as a Deaconess, and her impact on those around her was immeasurable. Since 2017, she was a devoted attendee at Bethel Missionary Church in Wappingers Falls, NY, where she formed close bonds with the church community and Pastor Hunt.


Cookie was also known for her whimsical side, with a special love for Betty Boop, and her collection of Betty Boop memorabilia brought joy to those who visited her. Cookie's warmth, kindness, and joyous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a truly dedicated and committed individual.


The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Homegoing Service will follow at 1:00 PM. The interment will take place on Friday, April 4, at 11:30 AM at Amityville Cemetery, 55 Harrison Avenue, Amityville, NY.
