Obituary

Bridget Theresa McGivney passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie after a short illness. She was 97. She was born in Ballinalee, County Longford, Ireland, on January 23, 1929, the daughter of Peter and Anne Maguire. She was the youngest of five children; her brothers James, Patrick, and Peter, and her sister Mary all predeceased her.

A resident of the Town of Wappinger for 57 years, Bridget emigrated to the United States in 1955, arriving in Brooklyn on Saint Patrick's Day after what she often declared would be the first and last sea voyage she would ever take. She first found work as a waitress at a Schraft's restaurant in New York City and then as an elevator operator at the old Western Union building on Hudson Street, where she first met Bernard 'Barney' McGivney, whom she married in 1957. Barney McGivney passed away in 2004. Bridget worked for Sears, Roebuck at the South Hills Mall in Poughkeepsie for 21 years. After her retirement, she spent her time caring for her family and working in her garden, planting flowers and vegetables, and then ruthlessly killing any weed that sought to violate the verdant integrity of the green, green grass of her home.

Her five sons survive her: Peter, of Wappingers Falls, Thomas and his wife Janie, of Bayside, Queens, Patrick and his wife Valerie, of Hopewell Junction, John, of Chelsea, and Timothy, of Wappingers Falls, as well as her grand-daughter Bridget Phillips and Bridget's husband Joseph Phillips, and their son, Ezra, all of Slidell, Louisiana, and by many more nieces and nephews in both Ireland and the United States.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 11am at St. Mary, Mother of the Church. 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill, NY 12524. Interment to follow at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9, Fishkill, NY 12524.
