Bruce Gramling's Obituary
Bruce Melvin Gramling, 93, of Hopewell Junction, NY passed away at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie, NY on August 14, 2023. He was born on June 24, 1930, the eldest son of the late Mildred and Charles Gramling of Jamaica, NY. He had been a resident of Hopewell Junction since November 1970.
Bruce graduated from Jamaica High School focusing on math and science with the goal of a career in engineering. He received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering while also completing the Army Basic ROTC program. Upon graduation Bruce volunteered for active duty with the Army serving with the 196th Regimental Combat Team at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He served 8 years in the Army Reserve as a Sargeant First Class. He also completed a year of graduate study at the Yale University Bureau of Highway Traffic.
Bruce and Janet (Jan) Gladys Bierman were married on May 14,1955 at Grace Episcopal Church in Jamaica, NY.
Bruce was employed as a traffic engineer for the NYC Department of Traffic, the East Hudson Parkway Authority and the NYS Department of Transportation.
Bruce was a longtime member of the Boy Scouts of America. As an eagle scout, he attended the International Boy Scout Jamboree in Poisson, France in 1947. As an adult, he held several leadership positions including scoutmaster of Troop 82 in LaGrangeville, NY.
After retiring in 1992 Bruce and Jan traveled to all fifty states and parts of Canada often in their motor home. He also enjoyed attending many activities of his children and grandchildren.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 68 years Jan at home, his children Leslie Fitzgibbon (Gregory) of Manassas, VA, Brenda Poholchuk (John) of Beacon, NY and Douglas Gramling (Laura) of Hawley, PA as well as his grandchildren Garrett Van Pelt (Kathleen), Meredith Short (David), Kimberly Poholchuk- Ahmad (Eddie), Alec Poholchuk (Caitlin Holt), Connor Gramling and Chase Gramling and great grandchildren George, Alia, Hazel, Adeline and Claire.
