Poughkeepsie, NY
Calvin G. Schmidt, 82, recently of Poughkeepsie, and a long time resident of West Glenville, passed away on July 9th, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Calvin was born July 21st, 1929 in Lynbrook, Long Island.
A standout catcher for Valley Central High (L.I.), Cal was chosen to compete in the exclusive "Brooklyn Against the World" baseball series. He went on to compete in college and afterward coached Babe Ruth League teams in the Schenectady Area with some players going on to MLB pro careers.
A life member and former Chief of the West Glenville Fire Department, Cal believed in giving back and being part of your community.
Upon graduation from Union College, class of '51, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served from 1952-54 in the leadership company at Camp Gordon, GA preparing troops for the Korean conflict. As a result, he received the National Defense Service Medal.
After leaving the service Cal returned to his Alma Mater to serve first as a recruiter and eventually to become the Registrar. He continued his academic pursuits and earned a Masters degree from Columbia University in 1958.
His passions included gardening and all things outdoors. Through the years, many a household received the benefit of fresh produce from his massive vegetable garden. Canoeing and hiking were two early pursuits of his, and Cal's love for them has passed on to the following generations.
Well into retirement, Cal began to enjoy the world of computing and the internet, establishing his own web site showing the happenings of both flora and fauna around "The Farm". At last count he had exceeded 200,000 hits and rising.
He is survived by his brother, Herbert Schmidt of Scotia; sister, Joyce Pearson and her husband Walter of Hopewell Junction; a niece, Barbette Ross and her husband Craig of Brewster; nephews, Paul Pearson and his wife Judy of Hyde Park, Bruce Pearson and his wife Ellen of Wappinger Falls, and Raymond Pearson and his wife Sue of La Luz, NM; and thirteen great nieces and nephews.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no calling hours are available. A private interment will follow in Uniondale, L.I. at the convenience of the family.
The family would like to thank Hospice and their staff along with others who cared so wonderfully for Calvin during his last days. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Cal's name to Hospice Foundation, Inc., 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
