Carmen Melendez-Gines Barbosa, a New York City resident since 1951, passed away at home in the Bronx on Sunday, January 11, 2026. She was 85.

Daughter of the late Jovito Melendez and Vicenta Gines, she was born in Manati, Puerto Rico on January 29, 1940. She moved to New York at the age of 11.

Carmen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved reading, animals, flowers, and nature. She was one of Jehova's Witnesses.

In 1986, she was predeceased by her husband, Augustine Barbosa.

Survivors include her son, Ernest Barbosa of New York, NY; her daughter, Linda Barbosa-Rivera of Newburgh, NY; her son, Albert Barbosa of Carolina, PR; her grandchildren: Julie Felix Robinson, Christian Joel Barbosa, Chelsea Alexandra Barbosa, Lisa Cancel (Jerry), and Melissa Shelton; her great-grandchildren: Jordan Robinson, Angelica Slinskey, Cindy Pellot, Matthew Cancel, Dominique Cancel, Torrey Shelton, and Tiffany Shelton and great-great-grandchildren Marco Pellot and Sienna Slinskey; as well as many other loving family members.

Memorial calling hours will be held on Saturday February 21, 2026 from 11am - 1 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill 1089 Main St. Fishkill, NY.
