Obituary

PLEASANT VALLEY – Carolyn Joan George, 78, an area resident since the 1950's, died on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born in Manhattan on July 9, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Kevensky) Weeks. She graduated from Kingston High School in 1954 and attended the NYS School of Nursing at Hudson River State School. She left school before graduating to marry John George (now deceased) and raise 5 daughters. She returned to Dutchess Community College and finished her Registered Nurse degree in 1978. Carolyn had a diversified nursing career. She worked for many years at the NYS Wassaic Facility, the federal VA, and also did community nursing. She finished her career working for the NYS Department of Corrections where she worked both as a RN and as a Nursing Administrator.

Carolyn was a volunteer Girl Scout leader. She was a Sunday school teacher at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. She was an artist who loved to draw and paint, and sold many of her paintings. Carolyn loved nature walks and the beach, her favorite was Chincoteaque Island in Virginia.

Carolyn is survived by her children, Nancy Baird and her husband David of Highland, Janet George of Pleasant Valley, Susan Jelis of Pleasant Valley, Jennifer George of Millerton, and Brenda Schanagher and her husband Brian of Valatie; her sisters, Barbara Hansen of Maryland, Virginia Robinson of Saugerties, Arden Weeks of Lake Luzerne, and Sandra Weeks of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren, Andrea Alvino, Angelina Rondinone, Melissa Johnson, Jessie Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Danielle Neville, Hunter Neville, Brian Schanagher, Jr., Emma Schanagher, and Harley Jelis; and her great-grandchildren, Aaleya Martinez, Ariana Mareyev, Gabriel Evans Jr., Khloe Evans, Dillon Brown, Nicolette Pinello, and Nicholas Johnson. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter, Anna Alvino in 2001 and her son-in-law, Gary Jelis in 2011.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5 – 8 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The funeral service will follow at 8pm at the funeral home.
