Obituary

Carvel H. Moore died Saturday at the age of 90 from the virus known as covid-19, at the Skyview Nursing Home in Croton, NY.

Born and raised along with her brother Bill in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, Carvel attended the Knox School in Cooperstown NY, and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie NY. She loved her experience at Vassar and thrived there, which caused her to remain an active alum until sidelined by illness in 2015. Following graduation, Carvel moved to New York City and took a job as a fashion editor at Mademoiselle Magazine. After marrying James Moore in 1954, she settled in to raise her two boys. Never content to stay entirely at home, Carvel became active in community affairs, eventually becoming President of the NYU Hospital Auxiliary and Chairwoman of Community Board 6 in Manhattan. The community board work eventually led Carvel (known as “Rusty” in those circles) to a second career in community relations, specializing in real estate development. She led the formation of the 14th Street Local Development Corporation in the early 1970s, which spearheaded the massive clean-up and transformation of Union Square Park, and the foundation of the City’s largest Green Market. Her work with the 14th Street LDC prompted Carvel to champion the use of new tax legislation to create business improvement districts, of which the 14th St/Union Square BID became the first, with Mrs. Moore at the helm. Carvel went on to form and run many other BIDs throughout the City, before eventually retiring to her beloved home, “Farview” in Germantown, New York.

Mrs. Moore is survived by two sons, Jim Moore and Jack Moore, their wives, Carrie and Ana Maria, five grandchildren: Emily, Catherine, Claire, Sam and Victoria, and three nephews and their families

Services will be held for immediate family members at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, overlooking the Hudson River, where Carvel will be laid to rest.
