Charles J. Scully, a Wappingers Falls resident since 1980 and formerly of South Glens Falls, died on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 82.
Son of the late Charles and Cecilia (McGann) Scully, he was born in Queens on October 5, 1933. He was raised in Westchester County, where he graduated from Croton-Harmon High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. Following his service, he received an associate degree from Westchester Community College.
Charles worked for the New York State Department of Corrections. After moving to Dutchess County, he served as Superintendent of Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill and later Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville, where he remained until his retirement.
He was an active member of the community and dedicated countless hours to many local non-profit and civic organizations. He was past president of the Fishkill Rotary Club and former board member of Literacy Connections, member of the V.F.W. Post 1286 in Fishkill, and also volunteered for the Fishkill Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels. He was a parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill.
An avid golfer, Charles enjoyed many other hobbies such as bowling and hiking.
On June 21, 1958, he married Mary F. Wise at Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton-on-Hudson. Mrs. Scully survives at home in Wappingers Falls.
Additional survivors include his son, Charles S. Scully of Hong Kong; his daughter, Kathleen Luci & her husband Rick of Rye; his grandchildren, Jacquelin Scully, Charles M. Scully, Kristen Luci, and Jason Luci; his sisters, Dorothea Mekeel of Florida and Judy Drozd of Croton-on-Hudson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and many other loving relatives & friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, William Scully.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 10 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
