VERBANK - Charles F. Van De Bogart, 92, died peacefully surrounded by the love of his family at his home on October 10, 2026.
Born on August 20, 1934 in Sharon, CT, Charles was the son of the late Charles and Hazel (Melius) Van De Bogart. Charles was raised in Millerton and lived his adult life in Verbank.
He proudly served in the US Army as a classified Radio Traffic Analyst from 1957-1959. He retired from the New York State Police in 1985 after 23 years of dedicated service. Throughout his distinguished career, he received numerous commendations. Among them was recognition from the New York State Police and the Dutchess County Legislature for his courage and bravery during a 1983 shooting incident in which his partner was shot and wounded. Charles always enjoyed telling stories about his adventures in Germany while in the U.S. Army, as well as his time as a New York State Trooper.
Charlie served as a board member of Verbank Cemetery, which he meticulously maintained for many years. He was instrumental in creating a full cemetery board with officers to secure its future after he was gone.
He was a familiar sight around town, often seen driving with his furry riding companion, Cooper. Inseparable until the end, he and Cooper would travel the back roads of Union Vale and Charles' beloved old stomping grounds in Millerton often.
An avid hunter, Charlie was especially proud to have shot an eight-point buck at the age of 82. He spent many hours discussing the day's hunt and tomorrow's plans with his son, sons-in-laws, grandson Charlie, and friends usually over food and a nip of anisette.
A fixture on the baseball diamond in his youth and the softball field as an adult, Charlie coached LaGrange Little League Baseball and men's softball in Verbank. He was a lifelong New York Yankees fan and never missed a UConn Women's Basketball game.
On February 28, 1963, he married Joan (Fitzpatrick) Van De Bogart who predeceased him in 2009. Charles is survived by his children, Jodi Hackbarth and her husband Steven, Clinton Corners, Kim Watt and her husband Chip, Stanfordville, Charles S. Van De Bogart, Verbank and Kathleen DeNunzio and her husband Vincent, Lagrangeville; his grandchildren that brought him great pride, Charles S. Van De Bogart, Jr. and his wife Leighann, Brian Spaeth, Abigail Hackbarth and her fiancé Benjamin Yager, Cassidy Watt, Victoria and Kiersten DeNunzio, as well as Coleman, Tyler, and Quinn Van De Bogart, always in his thoughts and heart; his only great-granddaughter, Sawyer Joan, who brought him joy; his sister, Joyce Van De Bogart; many nieces and nephews; and his muffin sharing companion, Cooper.
In addition to his wife and parents, Charles was also predeceased by his siblings, Mabel Lown, Helen "Sis" Heinz, and Jean Kluun.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16th from 3 - 7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 am at the funeral home followed by burial at Verbank Cemetery with military honors.
