FISHKILL - Chris Shannon, 78, passed away on January 1, 2021 . He was born on Feb. 7, 1942 to George and Mary Shannon in Manhattan.

Upon moving to Lake Carmel, NY he attended and graduated from Carmel High School. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1962-1966. He was stationed at Clarke Air Force Base in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.


He spent 26 years with the New York Dept. of Corrections retiring as a Sergeant in June 1994. Most of his time was spent at Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville, NY.

In April 1968, he married the love of his life, Denise, who survives at home. Together they raised 2 amazing, compassionate children, Christopher Jr., (Lauren) and Kelly Marie Bortle, (John). He was lovingly known as Pop Pop to Grace and Victoria Shannon who always brought a sparkle to his eyes and a smile to his face. He was also lovingly known as Grandpa to his 3 favorite Grand-dogs-Morgan, Hobbes, and Freya. He is also survived by his brothers, Kenneth (Michelle) of Connecticut and John of Tennessee.

Chris loved cruising, seeing most of the Caribbean Islands, and traveling to see our country, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Amsterdam, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Canada.

Playing BINGO was a favorite pastime. He remembers fondly Irene Lopez who called the numbers and always teased him when she called I- 27 and he would call out "a beautiful number"!

In accordance with his wishes, Chris was cremated. A private burial will be held at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery. A wake will be held at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction on Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 1-4pm with a service at 4 pm followed by military honors.

In lieu of flowers, Chris requested donations be sent in his memory to the Fishkill Rec Center, 793 Route 52, Fishkill with a note indicating it is for the senior center or to Hudson Valley Hospice, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
