Cynthia Anna Classey, a lifelong local area resident, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. She was 66.
Daughter of the late John and Joan (Smith) Schmitt, she was born in Queens on June 10, 1959. She graduated from John Jay Senior High School in 1977.
Cindy was an avid listener of rock music, always turning the radio on when she first woke up. Classic movies brought her comfort, you could find her watching The Princess Bride at least once a year.
She was a very adventurous person- riding horses bareback, traveling the world, hiking, and bringing her adult softball team to victory!
She was best known for her love of animals. Over the course of her life she had enough pets that she could have started her own zoo, including dogs, cats, bunnies, snakes, a variety of birds, and of course her beloved horse Spartacus.
She was an exceptionally skilled carpenter and craftsman creating detailed work on people's homes for over fifteen years. Alongside her husband and a team of friends and family, she built a beautiful log home that her and her husband lived in for over 35 years and raised their daughter in.
She was also an incredibly multi-talented artist creating many pieces of jewelry, paintings, drawings, and metal works that were displayed throughout their home.
Cynthia loved to cook and bake, friends and family were always thrilled to have a meal made by her.
She was a devoted loving partner and mother, staying strong during tough times and always taking care of her family when they needed it most.
On October 13, 1984, she married John "Jack" Classey at St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction. Cynthia was predeceased by Jack on March 3, 2026.
Survivors include her daughter, Caitlyn Classey along with her fiancé Jeremiah Wenutu of Kingston; her brother, Steve Schmitt; a host of siblings-in-law and many nieces, nephews, and other loving family members & friends.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, June 23 at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9, Fishkill, NY.
